Name of Owner: Elizabeth and Alan Psimas
Year you opened for business: 1988
How would you describe your business? Full service, traditional travel agency that has survived many traumatic changes in the industry. When we opened for business we were one of 50 travel agencies in the area. Now that number is down to less than 20. In spite of the Internet, we still have a strong business.
Briefly describe your typical client/customer: 50% corporate, 50% vacation. The corporate sales are related mostly to tugs and ships – they still have to travel for work – and defense contractors. The vacation sales are the executives of those companies.
What is one thing most people do not know about your business that would surprise him/her? Customer base: my largest corporate customer is not even located in the state.
What do you enjoy most about doing business in Olde Towne Portsmouth? It’s a very friendly place, and people are very committed to this city. You can walk down the street and know 99% of the people. It’s quite pleasant.
What do you enjoy most about doing business in Hampton Roads? It’s very friendly. I love the family atmosphere, the seasons, and knowing you know who to call when you need something.
What challenges do you face as a business owner? Getting business. The last 24 months were the worst for us sales-wise, even more than 9-11. Businesses didn’t travel then unless they need to. People are afraid now to spend vacation money, but now, we are seeing an improvement.
What’s in store for your business in the future? More folks doing simple airline ticketing. Also, focus on more complex overseas travel and high-end vacations.
What could local government do to help small business owners in your business district (besides lower taxes)? Providing safe, clean streets. It affects me more than anything. Also, providing activities and facilities for the homeless.
What is one thing your business district needs? A place to buy groceries. I love the idea of a farmer’s market.
